We have dropped our plans for establishing our “school” alternative. We do still love the idea of promoting Socratic Discussion, a code of character, and most importantly the priority of parents having the primary responsibility for your young ones as they gradually take over for themselves. We wish the best to all the others throwing themselves into the unknown and actually doing something about the problems they see. Did we fail? I don’t know, maybe we’re just opening up for something better?

So at this time, I do want to give a little more explanation to anyone that knew about this, but more importantly just share some of my favorite inspirational ideas and books that I hope you’ll explore in your own journey!

I admit it. It was all me, Suzan, that pushed the idea of affiliating with a group who could give us the motivation, a timeline, and the backend business knowledge to get us organized, along with the creative freedom to offer our personal ideas of a well-rounded education, as long as we promoted character values, involved the whole family, and provided Socratic discussions and physical fitness. We didn’t ever want to be a “school” or even cover any academics. We wanted to supplement what homeschool families were already doing, most importantly for our own 2 children.

Our first flaw was simply, we refused to contract with any assumed authority (ie. incorporating as a business). Also, we never materialized a proper location to host other families. Our own accommodations are just a former school bus and an ambulance parked next to an old pig barn, doing our best for a family of 4 plus various farm animals!

I have no opinion of anyone that made the cover story of our most notable state magazine this past month (October) as I never once met him, or spoke to him directly, or even knew he existed until sometime after we affiliated. I’m sure he has no knowledge of me either. And I still know of nowhere that I ever “misused… words, phrases, or curriculum” that belonged to anyone else. Without our business in order or a location realized, I barely shared my idea beyond building a website.

I still believe that most of us want something better for our children and our communities. And I believe it would be completely dishonorable to discourage anyone thinking outside that box which our society has brought us up in. Everything we do is a learning process as we climb to the spot where we can see more clearly.
